What We're Building Today

Today we're implementing the \"smart janitor\" of your log processing system - automated data lifecycle policies that intelligently manage your logs from creation to deletion. You'll build a policy engine that automatically moves data between storage tiers, enforces retention rules, and optimizes costs without manual intervention.

Key Components:

Policy Engine with rule-based automation
Real-time lifecycle monitoring dashboard
Compliance and governance reporting
Cost optimization tracking
Integration with yesterday's tiered storage system

The Lifecycle Challenge in Production Systems

Netflix processes over 1 trillion log events daily across their infrastructure. Without automated lifecycle policies, their storage costs would spiral into millions while performance degrades as \"hot\" storage fills with old data. Smart lifecycle policies automatically move 30-day-old viewing logs to cheaper warm storage while keeping recent data in high-performance tiers.

Similarly, financial institutions like JP Morgan Chase must retain trading logs for 7 years due to compliance requirements, but only need instant access to recent data. Lifecycle policies automatically archive older logs while maintaining compliance and optimizing costs.
